As you have already noticed Apple is getting ready to release the final build of its iOS 4.2 update as the Golden Master has just been offered to developers. Besides new features, and the fact that this is the first iOS version that’s going to be available on all iOS devices, we’re interested in how the jailbreak and unlock communities will deal with iOS 4.2.

It seems that the first signs are good and once iOS 4.2 gets here you’ll still be able to jailbreak your iOS device, iPhone, iPod touch and iPad, and following that, unlock the iPhone 4 and previous iPhone generations.

The Limera1n exploit will still work and will be used to jailbreak iOS 4.2 devices too. But while Apple is probably going to patch up the userland exploit that allows iOS 4.1 untethered jailbreaking, the Limera1n bootrom exploit will still be intact. That means the jailbreak community only has to come up with a new userland exploit to offer you an updated iOS 4.2 untethered jailbreak solution.

Before upgrading to iOS 4.2, remember to save your iOS 4.1 SHSH blobs first, provided that you jailbroke your iOS 4.1 device. That basically ensures that a future iOS 4.2 jailbreak according comex.

The actual jailbreak will be delayed apparently due to Cydia updates that have to be finished in order to make Cydia run on iOS 4.2 too. Following the release of the updated Limera1n-based jailbreak tools (Limera1n, GreenPois0n or PwnageTool) we can probably expect the first unlocks to come out too.

Recently we told you that the iPhone unlock is coming a couple of days after the official iOS 4.2 release for those devices with baseband 5.14.02 while iPhones on baseband 2.10.04 will only get it later down the road. But before an unlock is possible the jailbreak tools mentioned above have to be fully functional on iOS 4.2 devices.

So there you have it, folks, the future of iOS 4.2 jailbreaking and unlocking seems bright enough, just have a little more patience and make sure you read all the appropriate instructions whenever performing a jailbreak or unlock. Not that we’d advise you to take such action at any time!
